Setting up POP email in Mac Mail

Description

This guide will walk you through the steps needed to setup a POP mail account in Mac Mail. When you first open Mac Mail, you will be presented with the Welcome to Mail wizard.

 Enter your email address and password, then click Continue.

Mac Mail will try to setup your account automatically. If this step fails, as above, you will be given a chance to edit theUser name and Password. Do not edit these now. Instead, simply click Continue again.

The Wizard will now ask you to manually configure your Incoming Mail Server.
 

Please use the settings from the table below which reflect what email service you have with us.

Linux Mailbox Settings

This will depend on your ISP.

 Make sure the options for SSL and Authentication are as below, then click Continue:

Mac Mail will now ask for details for your outgoing mail server. Enter details as follows:

Description: You can enter any name here that you wish

Outgoing Mail Server: The outgoing server will be your ISP's SMTP server (see below)

Use Authentication: Unticked

The outgoing server will be provided by your ISP. There is a list of SMTP servers for common ISP's available here.

Make sure the Outgoing Mail Security settings are set as above, then click Continue:

You will be asked if you would like to take your account online. Select yes and then finish the setup.

Your mail account is now setup, but we need to check a setting before we're done. Click Mail then click Preferences....

On the Accounts tab, for the example account, configure your options for when mail is removed from the server. While possible, it is not recommended to leave mail on the server indefinitely when using a POP account, as POP accounts with excessive amounts of server-side mail can encounter many difficulties.

Once you've setup these details, congratulations, you're ready to go!
